You’ve probably noticed that most commercial kitchens have stainless steel shelves, counters and appliances. But it’s not just because it looks neat. Here’s why commercial kitchens have stainless steel shelves.
Hygienic
Stainless steel is one of the most hygienic materials available, which is why hospitals are also kitted out with a lot of stainless steel. It’s easy to wash using high temperatures, and can be fully sanitised without damaging the finish in any way. The smooth finish helps to inhibit the growth of bacteria, by not providing any nooks for bacteria to grow in.
Versatile
Stainless steel comes in a variety of grades, which vary in thickness, quality and price. Some are flexible and can be wrapped around a substrate to form countertops, while others are much harder and are made into sturdy, hardwearing shelves. Stainless steel shelves are a great storage option, as they can have open sides making it easier to see the contents. They are stable and sturdy, making them perfect for busy commercial kitchens.
Rust resistant
The name might suggest that it cannot rust or deteriorate in any way, but because stainless steel is an amalgam of several material it is able to rust. However, chromium in stainless steel helps to prevent rust caused by oxidation, and if you invest in stainless steel with a high chromium content your shelves should not rust or become damaged in any way. It should be noted that chlorine can cause stainless steel to rust, and cleaning products containing chlorine should not be used on stainless steel.
Portable
Unlike many other shelving options, which are built into or onto the walls, stainless steel shelving can be freestanding, allowing it to be moved. This can be useful when changing premises, or when re-organising the kitchen space. Of course, stainless steel shelves can also be wall-mounted or otherwise built in, if that’s what you prefer.
So whether you’re kitting out a new kitchen or renovating an old one, choosing stainless steel shelves is likely to save you money and time in the long run, as well as being the more hygienic and versatile option.
